Mar.12: Unisensor is a partner in the strategic research project MUSE
(12. marts 2012 11:05)Finding solutions for robust, reliable, fast and preferably portable solutions for detection of trace amounts (pg/ml to ng/ml) of small molecules (less than 40 kDa) in liquid samples is a large and increasing challenge in the private sector.
Grundfos has strategic focus on water quality monitoring and has ongoing promising development projects on parasite and bacteria detection. However, the company is in great need of ideas and methods for supplementary detection of hormones in water.
In ViroGates, methods for detecting blood level of a diagnostic marker named suPAR as well as white blood cell counting are instrumental for a future market penetration.
In order to fulfil the needs of Grundfos and ViroGates we propose a DVD disc sensor format for handling and analysis of water and blood plasma. The DVD mechanics and optics will be used for liquid handling and sensing. The disc format is developed in close collaboration with a Taiwanese research group who, as the only group in the world, is using the pick-up head of a DVD for detection of minute cantilever deflections. The Taiwanese group has a unique position since it has close collaboration with the producers of DVD heads and thus has the possibility of understanding and altering the control electronics and optics.
Unisensor has an optical platform for counting and analysing cells in 3 dimensions. We propose to combine the technologies of the DVD and the Unisensor optics in order to read-out from multiple sensors including cantilevers, Surface Enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and 3-dimensional microscopy.
The research project merges advanced nano, bio and information technology and provides key technological solutions for the society (environmental monitoring, waste water treatment, and prognostics/diagnostics).
